As a young manager, I used to say this to my team with the best intentions. It came from a place of kindness and a desire to foster a supportive, close-knit environment. Now, as a business owner, I realize that while this sentiment feels warm and inclusive, it can also be problematic. Teams aren’t families in the traditional sense, and treating them like it can blur important boundaries essential for a healthy and productive workplace.
Why it’s important to set boundaries 🙅🏼♀️
Work relationships thrive on professionalism, trust, and mutual respect. While it’s wonderful to have a team that feels connected and supportive, it’s also important to maintain professional boundaries. Unlike family dynamics, workplace relationships require clear expectations to ensure accountability and fairness. Boundaries protect everyone’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being by defining what is acceptable and what isn’t. They also help prevent burnout, resentment, and unhealthy power dynamics.
When we treat our team like family, it can unintentionally create an environment where people feel obligated to sacrifice personal time or overextend themselves for the sake of the group. I’ve celebrated milestones like weddings and baby showers with colleagues. I’ve had teammates support me during tough times—whether by dropping off coffee when I was sick or stepping in to care for my cat (shoutout to Nate!). These moments of kindness and connection are the hallmark of a strong team.

Trust is earned through consistent actions that demonstrate respect for each other’s time, skills, and contributions. For instance, trusting your teammates to deliver quality work without micromanaging shows that you value their expertise. At the same time, respecting their boundaries—like not expecting responses outside of work hours—reinforces mutual respect.

Getting to know your colleagues on a personal level can strengthen your bond as a team. Whether you're grabbing coffee together or participating in team-building activities, these shared experiences create lasting connections without crossing professional lines.
